Indiana’s Foursquare Dominance: 2 Venues Ranked Globally

Yes, Mayor Ballard proclaimed 4/16/2011 as Foursquare Day. And, yes, we know there are a ton of you checking in around Indy. Well, here’s some more exciting news!

Data was collected and compiled from all check ins worldwide for one week in January. Two of the most popular “nightlife” venues in the world that week were right here in Indiana:

#38: Thr3e Wise Men – A Brewhouse Production | www.thr3ewisemen.com

#48: Kilroy’s on Kirwood (Bloomington) | www.kilroyskirkwood.com

Must be something about their pepperoni stuffed breadsticks…

Unlock the Moonman Badge for a chance to win a trip to the MTV Video Music Awards

MTV 2010 VMA Moonman BadgeWant a chance to win a trip to the Video Music Awards? Just follow MTV on foursquare and check in to a music venue between now and September 5. You’ll unlock the 2010 VMA Moonman Badge and automatically be entered to win a trip to the 2010 VMAs in Los Angeles.

This contest is very similar to the VH1 Unlock it to Rock it Sweepstakes that offers a year of free concerts to one foursquare user who has unlocked the VH1 Fanatic badge. That’s not surprising given MTV and VH1 are corporate siblings. VH1’s deal included numerous on-air mentions of foursquare and their contest, so MTV will likely offer on-air exposure for foursquare as well. In fact, MTV has been teasing the contest on Twitter all weekend, alluding to an on-air announcement today.

Any venue in the rock club, music venue or concert hall categories is able to unlock the badge. The unlock text pokes fun at Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift at last year’s VMAs, saying:

We’re really happy for you, and we’re gonna let you finish, but that check-in just entered you to win a trip for two to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 12th! Good Luck and Rock Out!

The trip includes round-trip transportation and accommodations in LA for the VMAs on September 12. See the official rules for details.

MTV GYT BadgeIn addition to the Moonman badge, MTV is offering the GYT badge. It’s associated with their Get Yourself Talking, Get Yourself Tested initiative to raise awareness of sexually transmitted diseases among young people. It’s unclear how you unlock this badge.

While these are MTV’s first badges, it’s not the first time they’ve worked with foursquare. MTV has been offering tips from the “celebrities” on their reality shows since March, and users can follow the Jersey Shore’s DJ Pauly D on foursquare. Their Jersey Shore City Guide iPhone app lets you check in to venues in the guide on foursquare by first-pumping with your phone.

The extremely limited nature of the Moonman badge should make it an exciting one to earn. The mainstream exposure from the unveiling of their digital billboard in Times Square, hitting three million users and the possibility of multiple on-air mentions from MTV should make this another great week for foursquare’s user growth.

What do you think of the new badges and sweepstakes?

There’s Foursquare in Bloomington

How’s it going? My name’s DeJohn Rose and I am the voice behind the brand new @4SqBTOWN, Bloomington’s source for Foursquare information and support.

I’ll admit it, at first I was very skeptical of Foursquare and the whole location based social networking. I didn’t get it. Then I started watching my friend’s Foursquare progress on Twitter and I became intrigued. Once I found out that Scotty’s Brewhouse offered a discount for checking in, I bit the bullet, registered, and was instantly hooked.

In my day job, as the marketing and public relations coordinator at The Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, our mission is better business, better community. I believe that this applies outside of my job as well, which is part of my motivation for helping promote Foursquare in Bloomington. I had decided to start collecting Foursquare deals with my professional alter ego @ChamberBloom, so when @Hust0058 approached me about contributing to the @4SqINDY blog, and doing it slightly more officially, I jumped at the opportunity.

In my short time working on what I call the @4SqBTOWN project, I have learned an immense amount about how Foursquare works and the different ways people use it. A lot of this knowledge has been gained in the extremely interesting and informational Foursquare Chat sessions hosted by @4SqINDY.

I’m really excited to help expand Foursquare’s reach and increase the number of users and participating businesses and organizations in Bloomington. With a large student population, tech savvy residents, and forward thinking local businesses, Bloomington is an ideal place to have an active Foursquare community.

My goal is to get more businesses involved offering discounts and specials, which will increase the number of users, and in turn, boost revenue for local establishments.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or want to get involved feel free to e-mail me at dmrose14@gmail.com or tweet me @4SqBTOWN and @DeJohnR.

Below is a list of current businesses on Foursquare in Bloomington:

Bloomington Bagel- monthly mayor receives free breakfast and t-shirt

Pizza X- prize for weekly mayor

Scotty’s Brewhouse- 10% off lunch M-Th & $5 off $25 dinner Mon-Tue for checking in/ 10% off always for mayor
