Our friends from Columbus, Victoria & William, made the trip again. DJ AllReady was spinning the vinyl. There were a ton of giveaways and we even played some Foursquare!

How do the foursquare employees stack up on foursquare?
Posted by Eric Thomas in Fun on August 12, 2011
I found myself sitting at the foursquare homepage looking at the list of people I follow and noticed three of the 4Sq Staff I follow checked into their NYC HeadQuarters venue.

I clicked through to the venue with the intent to marvel at the billions of check-ins at the home of foursquare (14,487 check-ins). What struck me was the 85 people listed as staff on their venue, it makes sense as they all are staff at foursquare.

I then started thinking “with such an easy access list of all the people that work at foursquare, I wonder how they stack up against each other?” Here are my findings (data dated July 20, 2011*):
Average of all employees:
Days Out: 413 Check-Ins: 1332 Things Done: 109 Badges: 43 Mayorships: 4 Friends: 148 Followers (0s not included): 891 Following: 29
Other interesting tidbits:
Twenty-One staff have followers, Sixty-Four do not (aka Celebrity account). Only three people don’t have any tips (This includes Squarebot, who is clearly a bot and probably doesn’t have much of an opinion to share). Eleven 4Sq’ers have not linked their account to Twitter or Facebook, Two have their account linked with only Facebook, Thirteen linked with only Twitter, and the remaining Fifty-Nine link both Twitter and Facebook. Sixteen staff have Zero Mayorships.
Top Performers:
Dens leads in total Days Out (1801) and Followers (6510)
Naveen leads in Things Done (999) and Friends (570)
Nate F. leads in Check-Ins (5194) and Mayorships (36)
Holger L. leads in Following pages (145)
Mike S. is the Badge Champion with 99
I also plucked a tip from each staffer’s most popular tips… here’s a sprinkling of some of my favorites.
Dens shares Iron Works BBQ “Yeah, I know it’s packed but you gotta get the steak with the butter sauce (shit, what kind of sauce was it?) and the side of mac and cheese. Bananatown delicious.”
Naveen highlights Happy Ending with this quip “go downstairs. there’s no cell service = the best thing in the world. hide from everyone. get lost. get your friend to DJ. dance. take lots of great pictures. lose track of time. stumble out. 3:52 AM.”
harryh likes 151 “The best dimly lit, rock-and-roll, everyone is getting wasted, basement bar in nyc. Bring a posse, snag the back corner with the bead”
Alex R. fills us in on Palo Santo “I highly recommend going double porky: start with the pork belly tacos (homemade tortillas + guacamole are slamming) and end with the Heritage pork. Oink!”
J Crowley loves Fragole “Bolognese is a must. Some of the best I’ve ever had. Get a quartino of multipulciano too. Parpadelle with short rib ragu is a close second.”
Tristan has this to say about Peels “my favorite place in the city. Here’s what you need to do. 1) order the shrimp + grits (wow!), 2) order the La Chouffe beer (seasonal and awesome), 3) build a biscuit (bacon + pepperjack). Game over!”
Anna F. bring some international knowledge to the states with her tip at The Summit Bar “As a native Russian, I give you my word that Russian Standard vodka is the best. If you like cucumbers and lime juice, get the Charmaine Star. You’re welcome.”
Sam B. helps us find our way, on the cheap, at Livingston South Railway Station (LVG) “Looking for the Livingston Shopping Centre? Grab the 404 bus from the station every half an hour, normally costs £1 but free if you just got off the train!”
Jeff H. verifies the authenticity of Joe’s Ginger “Try shanghai thick noodle stirfry, YES! (Recommended a guy grew up from shanghai). Be aware of the only lady staff at the cash counter tho, very impatient!”
Akshay P. tips off the brewhounds at Amsterdam Ale House “Surprisingly good selection of local seasonal brews. Order up a $6 glass of something 10%+ abv and feel just a bit smug about finding this place.”
David B. reflects on his childhood at House Of Air Trampoline Park “This place is so rad! I wish I had something like this growing up. I’d be throwing corked 540′s left and right on the hill. An hour on the trampoline will get you in shape for the snow for realz.”
*Except for the 4 new staff that appeared after July 20, 2011: Coby B, Steve T, Eric Z, and Simon F; their data is dated Aug 3, 2011.

Unlock the Check-in Limit!
Posted by dwaynekilbourne in 4Sq Info, 4SqDAY, Fun on April 12, 2011
Can you believe it? Foursquare Day is nearly here, and so many foursquare communities are planning celebrations! At over 8 million users and rapidly growing, foursquare has arrived at its second annual Foursquare Day celebration in a shiny new pair of party shoes; this year’s celebrations will surely be exponentially bigger and better than ever before. Of course, this social media holiday is somewhat of a first of its kind. And, as I mentioned before, I really find that a holiday is not really a holiday unless you can have the day off. A holiday is the time to either “sit back and relax” or to go out and explore. In this case, I pick the latter! Since this holiday falls on a Saturday, I suspect many people will be celebrating by exploring and checking into many venues. As such, I think that it is only right that we get the day off from the check-in limits (currently, the rule appears to still stand as follows: 30 check-ins maximum within a rolling 24 hours and 4 check-ins during any 15 minute time period for check-in to be given consideration towards points, badges, and mayorships)! This will give heavy users like Eric Andersen and me the chance to not worry about reaching the Rapid Check-in Error for one day of the year, and for people like Jeff Cutler to explore the great local foursquare festivities while trying to reach his Foursquare Day Check-in goal of 416! I would hate to see someone end up missing out on a special or a mayorship because he or she checked in too much at the end of the day prior to Foursquare Day! Let’s make Foursquare Day fun and relaxing for all, Mr. Crowley & gang! What do you think?

NCAA Championship Check-In for @ButlerBlue2 on foursquare
Butler Blue II is quite the lovable college mascot. Recent attention from NCAA March Madness has highlighted that for Blue II. Not a bad week — featured in the AP Press and on TMZ (for… #winnning, duh).
In addition to being an adorable mascot Blue II also has a winning social media presence.
1. Blue II has more followers on Twitter than any single Twitter account from Butler’s NCAA Championship opponent (UCONN).
2. Championship Check-ins! Blue II is a pretty active foursquare user in Indy. His first check-in was at the beginning of this school year (September 28, 2010).

Blue II holds down several foursquare Mayorships in Indianapolis – including City Dog Grocery. A dog’s gotta eat!
You can find him at: http://foursquare.com/butlerblue2
The only other college mascot that I am aware of that has a full-blown foursquare presence is the Oregon Duck whose user account recently merged with its foursquare page. We’re just hoping that Butler comes out on the winning end of this NCAA championship, unlike Oregon in the 2011 BCS Championship Game.

Who knows, maybe Blue II will make an appearance at Indy’s 4sqDay event on 4/16?!

Will You Unlock This Foursquare Badge On St. Patrick’s Day?
Many of you have asked if there is a badge for St. Paddy’s Day.
Well, there kind of is. Good times with green beer on weekday may unlock fun for some – and less fun for others.
To unlock the hangover badge, check-in after 2am at a venue (with primary category “bar”) followed by a check-in the next morning between 8am-8:59am at work (primary category “office”) and you should unlock this badge. This badge originally debuted at SxSW 2010, was retired and was re-released a few months ago.

Unlock text reads:
Late to bed and early to rise. Good luck making it through the day. Tip: bacon egg n’ cheese and orange gatorade will be your bestest friend.
We encourage responsible drinking, designated drivers or taking a cab (Yellow Cab in Indy is 317.487.7777). But, if you’re going to be rocking a hangover – you may as well sport this foursquare badge of honor!

Global Venues: Good Idea or bad?
Posted by dwaynekilbourne in Foursquare Help, Fun on March 14, 2011
Foursquare, the world’s most popular location-based mobile platform, now has over 7.5 million users. It’s recent and continued growth has made it a key ingredient in many people’s and organization’s social media mix. Its growing popularity is attracting more and more national media attention; furthermore, foursquare is continuing to innovate by adding new application features for consumers (like explore), adding new tools for claimed businesses (like additional special capabilities), creating new badges (like the many offered at SXSW), and updating their point system.
Now that there are over 7.5 million users, we are finding more and more people looking for ways to learn more about foursquare. Some have found the increasingly popular podcast from AboutFoursquare (that is usually recorded Sunday evenings and posted every Monday morning) and the great TweetChat #4sqCHAT, the Twitter chat session started by @4sqINDY that is held over Twitter (globally) at 9pm EST (GMT -5:00) each and every Monday. Yet, others still do not know! So, how can we inform and engage these people? Read the rest of this entry »
