Mayor Ballard Declares April 16 “Foursquare Day” in Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Greg Ballard today officially declared April 16 “Foursquare Day” in Indianapolis in honor of the second anniversary celebration of the community social network.
Mayor Ballard issued a proclamation for the Foursquare Day celebration for social media users and small business owners. The event will be held at the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown from 1:44 p.m. to 4:44 p.m. Saturday, April 16. Foursquare allows local companies to promote their businesses for free and helps residents discover the city, with more than 100,000 users registered in Indianapolis.
“Foursquare can be used to drive support for our local business community and offers the Indianapolis Foursquare community fun, new ways to explore our city,” said Mayor Ballard.
Foursquare, a location-based mobile platform, lets users check in to venues and “unlock” a city. Conventions and tourism groups such as Visit Indiana and the Indiana State Fair are some of those who use the site to engage the community.

4SqDAY Speaker Spotlight: Russ Chargualaf

Occupation(s) – Executive Chef, Houlihan’s Castleton Square; Social Media Liason, Houlihan’s Indiana; PR/Marketing for Loo Abby; Professional Bass Angler;
Russ moved to Indianapolis in 1999 to work for the Indiana Pacers after living in Chicago and working for the Chicago White Sox for six years. Has been working with Houlihan’s for over three years now. While being the Executive Chef during the day, he’s the marketing guru 24-7. Russ integrates Houlihan’s with his love of fishing by having my boat wrapped with the Houlihan’s logo and marketing necessities. Russ also hosts Social Media Day Indy on a regular basis to help promote Houlihan’s and to meet the Social Media Community. Russ has been using Foursquare for over a year, Twitter over 8 months, and Facebook over two years.
Russ started using Foursquare as a game with friends but quickly saw there was a huge potential to use it as a marketing tool for his restaurant. The Houlihan’s Castleton location is considered the “rogue” location in comparison to the rest of the company. Russ likes to try new things, push the envelope, and use marketing in unique ways. If you visit locations like car repair shops, hotels, or retail stores in the Castleton area and check in on Foursquare, you’re likely to see a tip to come and see Russ at Houlihan’s. Russ currently holds some unique Mayorships throughout the city which was featured in Metromix magazine. Russ enjoys seeing all aspects of using Foursquare as a game, a concierge, gps, and a business building tool.
As a marketing tool for the band “Loo Abby”, Russ rewards all Foursquare users who check into the venue when “Loo Abby” is playing. Through the power of Twitter and Facebook, I’m able to promote not only the Best Band in Indy, but also use Foursquare as an incentive.

4SqDAY Speaker Spotlight: Bruce McClain
Posted by CBanks in 4SqDAY, Indianapolis on April 14, 2011

Bruce McClain is a huge fan of Foursquare and location-based social networking. As Director of Technology and Digital Media at Scotty’s Brewhouse, he helps manage one of Indiana’s most checked in set of venues. With over 20,000 check-ins company wide, Scotty’s Brewhouse continues to find new ways to use Foursquare to promote their business.
Last summer, to help promote Foursquare and Scotty’s new concept, Bruce helped organize an “I’m on a Boat!” party at Scotty’s Lakehouse. Guests were able to stop by the Lakehouse, get inside an actual kayak and after checking in on Foursquare they received an “I’m on a Boat” badge. Not only did this provide an opportunity to get a badge, it also doubled the restaurants sales for the day.
The Foursquare practices used by the Scotty’s digital marketing team have been featured on Entrepreneur.com, Msnbc.com, as well as many other online publications.
As part the of 2011 Foursquare Day celebration, Scotty’s Brewhouse Downtown Indy will be holding a party starting at 4:44pm. All attendees of the Foursquare Indy Conference are invited to attend immediately following the conference. There will be specials, giveaways, and old school foursquare courts set up for some friendly competition.

Unlock the Check-in Limit!
Posted by dwaynekilbourne in 4Sq Info, 4SqDAY, Fun on April 12, 2011
Can you believe it? Foursquare Day is nearly here, and so many foursquare communities are planning celebrations! At over 8 million users and rapidly growing, foursquare has arrived at its second annual Foursquare Day celebration in a shiny new pair of party shoes; this year’s celebrations will surely be exponentially bigger and better than ever before. Of course, this social media holiday is somewhat of a first of its kind. And, as I mentioned before, I really find that a holiday is not really a holiday unless you can have the day off. A holiday is the time to either “sit back and relax” or to go out and explore. In this case, I pick the latter! Since this holiday falls on a Saturday, I suspect many people will be celebrating by exploring and checking into many venues. As such, I think that it is only right that we get the day off from the check-in limits (currently, the rule appears to still stand as follows: 30 check-ins maximum within a rolling 24 hours and 4 check-ins during any 15 minute time period for check-in to be given consideration towards points, badges, and mayorships)! This will give heavy users like Eric Andersen and me the chance to not worry about reaching the Rapid Check-in Error for one day of the year, and for people like Jeff Cutler to explore the great local foursquare festivities while trying to reach his Foursquare Day Check-in goal of 416! I would hate to see someone end up missing out on a special or a mayorship because he or she checked in too much at the end of the day prior to Foursquare Day! Let’s make Foursquare Day fun and relaxing for all, Mr. Crowley & gang! What do you think?

4SqDAY Speaker Spotlight: Chris Theisen
![]()
Chris Theisen has been an advocate of location based marketing for nearly a year. While employed as the Digital Communications Director at Hare Chevrolet he initiated and saw the rewards of marketing the dealership via Foursquare. Whether it be to gain a free car wash along with mayor status or receive a $10/10% discount (whichever was greater) Foursquare produced nearly 100 checkins. A majority of those checkins were from customers or prospects.
While on Chris’ watch Hare also saw benefits by gaining nearly 300 friends on the service, allowing Hare to interact with customers and their online community via commenting on their friends checkins at other locations along with Hare. One area that saw Chris use Foursquare in a “unique” way was the tips section. While leaving a tip as a business isn’t really unique (Chris borrowed the idea from fellow speaker Russ Chargulaf of Houlihans) it was one of the first of its kind for a non major brand. Anytime a Foursquare user would checkin at a business nearby the dealership they saw a tip from Hare detailing the fact that Hare participated actively in a platform they were using and also offered a discount. While the tip wasn’t exactly about the location itself, the tips all played on the location and their business so it was more relevant than a blatant marketing message.

4SqDAY Speaker Spotlight: Jeremy Williams

Last fall, the Indiana Office of Tourism Development worked with Indiana-owned technology firm Right On Interactive to help us integrate Foursquare with our email marketing efforts and our annual Fall Leaf Cam. With the help of ROI, we were able to email targeted, exclusive coupons to Foursquare members when they checked-in at or near our Leaf Cam locations during a 2-month campaign in the fall. By targeting engaged consumers who were already traveling in Indiana, we achieved a 75% coupon redemption rate – a tremendous result.
In addition to achieving a high response rate, the entire promotion was cutting-edge and was the first time (to our knowledge) that Foursquare and email had been put together for an integrated marketing campaign based on the users’ check-ins.
