I Want That Badge: Super Duper Swarm and Epic Swarm

It’s that time of year again! We’re all headed to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) to see the greatest spectacle in racing, the Indianapolis 500. While most of you have your Swarm Badge, and some of you even have your Super Swarm badge, with a few key steps and a careful check-in, we can be the proud owner of a Super Duper Swarm Badge.

The key thing about these badges is which venue to check in to. There are countless venues in and around IMS. I have everything from the venue itself to sections in the grandstand. When you first get to IMS, you may check in to those subvenues if you want to, but remember you can only check in three times for every fifteen minutes. About a half an hour before the race starts, pull out your phone and check into “Indianapolis Motor Speedway”  on foursquare. If you’re lucky enough to be able to find it on your cell phone app, it’s the only venue that the History Channel has the top tip in the area. If you have to check in from the mobile site (I had to last year) https://foursquare.com/mobile/ it’s the venue with the following info:

4790 W 16th St
Hulman Bl at 5th St
Speedway, IN 46222
(317) 484-6572

Another way you can check in is clicking on our venue (that we’ll be checked in to) and check in with us. Remember with group check in, badges like the swarm badge are only one check in for the day, but you have to be checked in when it reaches the various swarm sizes (50, 250, 500, and 1000) or after it reaches the various swarm sizes (50, 250, 500, and 1000). Also, your check in will only last three hours, so check into the main IMS venue right before the race and enjoy.

4SqDAY Speaker Spotlight: Bruce McClain

Bruce McClain is a huge fan of Foursquare and location-based social networking. As Director of Technology and Digital Media at Scotty’s Brewhouse, he helps manage one of Indiana’s most checked in set of venues. With over 20,000 check-ins company wide, Scotty’s Brewhouse continues to find new ways to use Foursquare to promote their business.

Last summer, to help promote Foursquare and Scotty’s new concept, Bruce helped organize an “I’m on a Boat!” party at Scotty’s Lakehouse. Guests were able to stop by the Lakehouse, get inside an actual kayak and after checking in on Foursquare they received an “I’m on a Boat” badge. Not only did this provide an opportunity to get a badge, it also doubled the restaurants sales for the day.

The Foursquare practices used by the Scotty’s digital marketing team have been featured on Entrepreneur.com, Msnbc.com, as well as many other online publications.

As part the of 2011 Foursquare Day celebration, Scotty’s Brewhouse Downtown Indy will be holding a party starting at 4:44pm. All attendees of the Foursquare Indy Conference are invited to attend immediately following the conference. There will be specials, giveaways, and old school foursquare courts set up for some friendly competition.

Register now to see Bruce McClain and the rest of our great speakers at our4SqDAY Conference.

Will You Unlock This Foursquare Badge On St. Patrick’s Day?

Many of you have asked if there is a badge for St. Paddy’s Day.

Well, there kind of is. Good times with green beer on weekday may unlock fun for some – and less fun for others.

To unlock the hangover badge, check-in after 2am at a venue (with primary category “bar”) followed by a check-in the next morning between 8am-8:59am at work (primary category “office”) and you should unlock this badge. This badge originally debuted at SxSW 2010, was retired and was re-released a few months ago.

Hangover Badge

Unlock text reads:

Late to bed and early to rise. Good luck making it through the day. Tip: bacon egg n’ cheese and orange gatorade will be your bestest friend.

We encourage responsible drinking, designated drivers or taking a cab (Yellow Cab in Indy is 317.487.7777). But, if you’re going to be rocking a hangover – you may as well sport this foursquare badge of honor!

I Want That Badge: Check in to the #Superbowl From Your Couch

Foursquare is trialling a new nationally featured “place” to check into. What better way to try it out than Superbowl XLV?

“Super Bowl Sunday” will be available in the “trending now” section on Fourquare’s mobile apps. If you check in and shout which team you’re rooting for, you’ll unlock a Packers or Steelers badge. Badges will come with redemption codes for 20 percent off at NFLShop.com.

Though no money is changing hands with the NFL,  I have a feeling we’ll see more of this soon, as an engagement tool for brands. A number of companies such as Miso, GetGlue and Badgeville have already begun to extend the check-in to things like TV shows and websites.

This represents usage growth opportunities and monetization events for a wider range of advertising. Foursquare, being the leader of the check-in game — and a proponent of constant evolution — is primed to get this going in unique ways.
