Mayor Ballard Declares April 16 “Foursquare Day” in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Greg Ballard today officially declared April 16 “Foursquare Day” in Indianapolis in honor of the second anniversary celebration of the community social network.

Mayor Ballard issued a proclamation for the Foursquare Day celebration for social media users and small business owners. The event will be held at the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown from 1:44 p.m. to 4:44 p.m. Saturday, April 16. Foursquare allows local companies to promote their businesses for free and helps residents discover the city, with more than 100,000 users registered in Indianapolis.

“Foursquare can be used to drive support for our local business community and offers the Indianapolis Foursquare community fun, new ways to explore our city,” said Mayor Ballard.

Foursquare, a location-based mobile platform, lets users check in to venues and “unlock” a city. Conventions and tourism groups such as Visit Indiana and the Indiana State Fair are some of those who use the site to engage the community.

Dear @MayorBallard we want 4/16 to be Official @Foursquare Day in Indy.

Mayor Ballard,

We’re writing you today to ask for your proclamation of April 16, 2011 to be Foursquare Day in Indianapolis. This day is recognized globally because of the date’s significance as 4/16, which is the number four squared. Foursquare is a mobile application that lets you check in to venues and “unlock” your city. Foursquare users become “mayors” of venues for having the most checkins within a certain amount of days. As the official Mayor of Indianapolis, on behalf of the city’s large number of Foursquare users, we find it appropriate to designate this day on behalf of all the Foursquare mayors in the city.

Foursquare is more than just a new and exciting social media application. Many local businesses leverage Foursquare’s free ability to offer specials for “checking in” to their location. This is a great way to celebrate loyal customers. Additionally, Foursquare builds community through updates sent from users on Foursquare to Facebook and Twitter.

Foursquare helps us find new and exciting things right here in our backyard. Because these specials are primarily taken advantage of by local merchants, Foursquare fosters local growth in the business community. We have reached out to local businesses to ask for a one day only Foursquare special to help bring awareness to the platform through an official Foursquare Day.

With your help we can use Foursquare to drive support to our local business community and help the Indianapolis Foursquare community discover fun, new ways to explore our great city.

Signed on behalf of the foursquare Mayors of Indianapolis,

#4SqTIPS: Indianapolis #Foursquare Ambassadors

Foursquare has started shipping the Ambassador Cards in the mail, and at 4SqINDY we want to make sure that our local Foursquare Ambassadors have the tools to tell local businesses what Foursquare has to offer. Justin Kadis has designed a simple deck to walkthrough with local businesses to help them get a better understanding of what Foursquare is and how they can use it. You can browse through the deck below or you can download it here (PowerPoint) if you’d like to modify and use it.

Also to our local Ambassadors we would like to open our Indianapolis Special Offers page to you! We want to use that page to continue to show how Foursquare is being used right hear in our backyard. We’ve also set up a Twitter list so you can get in contact with other Foursquare Ambassadors more easily. If you want to be added to this list please comment on this post or at reply to us on Twitter at @4SqINDY.   We’ve also started a Facebook Group for you, the Foursquare Ambassadors, to share tips with each other.

What other resources can we provide to help you make Foursquare more awesome in Indy?
